MPL Great Lakes Marine Collection-- The Milwaukee Public Library's Great Lakes Marine Collection includes original materials - log books, vessel plans, and wreck reports. The on-line searchable vessel database contains over 7000 vessels. Each ship is listed in CountyCat, the library catalog. To find your ship, look in the catalog and enter the name of the ship as if it were a title of a book. You may then order copies of the vessel file from Ask the Admiral or WMHS as outlined in RESEARCH. Boatnerd, Great Links to the Great Lakes--An extensive and thorough list of Great Lakes web sites organized by catagory. This single list pretty much covers all that is available for the Great Lakes on the web. The Great Lakes Historical Society - Inland Seas Museum contains the Clarence S. Metcalf Library, the largest collection of books, periodicals, drawings, records and technical materials devoted to Great Lakes History. The Association for Great Lakes Maritime History is an international organization of museums, historical societies, libraries, archives, and individuals interested in preserving Great Lakes maritime history. This site provides links to all its members. BGSU Bowling Green State Univ. Historical Collections of the Great Lakes. The HCGL's collections include materials related to commercial shipping, shipbuilding, navigation, maritime law, commercial fishing, shipwrecks, yachting, labor history, popular literature, freshwater ecology, recreation, and the history of Great Lakes ports. Their searchable online vessel database provides access to data on many Great Lakes vessels some data sheets include photos. Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston, Canada provides an online searchable database to over 13,000 vessels from 1760 to 1930. They will provide basic statistics as to vessel name, port of registry, rig, tonnage, owner, builder, date and place of build. Maritime History of the Great Lakes. This site provides a collection of documents intended to be of value to those researching Great Lakes History. Of particular interest to genealogists is the searchable on line database to the 1897 and 1903 editions of the Blue Book of American Shipping. These provide listings of Owners, Captains and Masters of Great Lakes vessels as described. Also provided is a limited searchable enrollment database of almost 6000 American Great Lakes vessels prior to 1860 Michigan Family History Network provides a Great Lakes Shipmasters database. This searchable database at present contains over 2,700 Ship Masters of the Great Lakes. All the Ship Masters on the Great Lakes have been entered from the Blue Book of American Shipping 1900. This book contains two listings for shipmasters, the International Ship Masters Association listings and one compiled by the authors beyond the IMSA. Downward Bound This site has several searchable data bases. One of the searchable databases at present contains over 2,700 Ship Masters of the Great Lakes. Smiths master index of links to North American Maritime Museums websites. Wisconsin Historical Society. The Society possesses one of the largest genealogical collections in the country. The collection is not limited to Wisconsin history and genealogy but includes family and local history material pertaining to all regions of North America. Published materials are found in the Library (2nd floor) and unpublished materials in the Archives (4th floor). You may also search for genealogy and family history collections held by the Society in ArCat, the Archives Online Catalog. Genealogical books and magazines located in the library are listed in MadCat. The Wisconsin State Historical Society Archeology page provides access to information and videos of interest to divers & historians. Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation The Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation (GLSF) is a Wisconsin non profit (501 (C)(3)) corporation organized for the purpose of furthering public awareness of our Great Lakes marine heritage through education and research, and promoting conservation, study and responsible enjoyment of historic Great Lakes shipwrecks by divers and non divers alike. GLSF provided programming, data conversion and on going web hosting for the WMHS Online Enrollment Index at no cost to WMHS as part of the GLSF grant program. Pier Wisconsin is dedicated to providing hands on educational access to students and individuals interested in our maritime past.
